I remember winning a Browning fixed blade skinning knife for selling the most sausage in an FFA fundraiser - and being awarded the knife in class without an eyebrow being raised by anyone. I remember spending most of my non-school/non-chore free time in the river bottoms as a 12 year old kid. I was never without either a shotgun or a .22 rifle.
I remember when if you had a beef with another kid, you might beat the dog shit out of each other.... but the thought of driving by their house at night and spraying it with random gunfire never entered your head.
Guns haven't changed our society, and lack of government control hasn't led us to where we are now.
I remember being part of a youth group that has military ties (there's a couple out there) and when going to one of the meetings, where subsequently, we'd spend the weekend in the woods learning things like building fires and shelters, land navigation, et al... I'd ride a city bus in military OD green fatigues, OD green duffle or ALICE pack, and web gear with a big 'ol K-BAR. I can guarantee I'd be drawn down on if I were a kid and did that today.
I had a toy Thompson that looked just like that. Pull the trigger and it made that machine gun sound. My Dad also got me a toy 1911 that fired spring loaded projectiles. Those were the two he was trained with in the service.
Ya know, when I was a kid (about 10) everywhere myself and several friends went, we all carried .22 rifles. We were always hunting squirrels, blue jays and such. No one batted an eye.
Where I live, you can still pretty much do the same thing.
The boy today would be expelled from school, put on ritalin and have to take lifetime anger management classes, and probably grow up to be the next Phil Donahue.
Amen to all... I guess the happy part is that other than urban kids, and perhaps even most kids still know, play, train and love guns. Most kids biggest dream come through is a BB gun or better...
It won't be long before those skills and knowhow about guns may be put to test...
Remember, Pompey's, or Sodom and Gomorra's way of life, lust and corruption were not just accepted, but also celebrated, before their demise... Never forget the God factor...
That kid would be held at gunpoint and treated like a mass murderer in today's day and age.

We could run around with BB guns all day.
ReplyDeleteWe would even hitch a ride home from somebody when it got late, with our guns. No big deal.
