I took a class in 10th grade that taught me how to balance a budget, put together a resume, put together a balanced menu, how to shop for insurance, how to rent a house, all that good stuff. It was called Practical Living 101 and was a required class.
I know "adults" who didn't know how to fill out a check, 20-30 year olds who didn't know how to reconcile a bank statement (doesn't the bank do that for you? Um, NO.) But each one could tell me about Sylvia Plath, and that Che Guevara was just the coolest dude ever. ~facepalm~
I didn't learn anything of value after the sixth grade.(a few years before you were born).I don't use anything in my day-to-day life that was taught in HS.---Ray
Wow. I didn't learn any of that in school. I learned all of that at home from family or through being an inquisitive busy body and figuring it out myself.
All public education is good for is busywork. Sit down, stand still, shut up, dont think about anything, just regurgitate what we tell you. I know not every school is like that, but when the vast majority are, no wonder we are in the mess we have now. Its amazing to see the amount of busywork in education.
Oh and getting the stuffing beat out of you because they now take a wait and see approach to bullying even when school policy states they have a zero tolerance policy. They are so fine with status quo and afraid to punish bullies because it might label the bully a problem causing child that they do nothing.
Thank goodness we homeschool. I get to pick the curriculum, can go at the speed of the offspring, and can tailor it to their interests. Plus, learning real life applications, skills, responsibility, accountability and manners. :) (Although I must confess the math and reading primers are books from the 1800's so that it doesn't have all the busywork malarkey and so we learn phonetics.)

Oh man, I just re-read what I wrote. I need to learn not to post before I'm fully with it in the morning. I sound like a raving nutter!
ReplyDeleteSorry for letting the crazy part of me access to the computer. The 'normal' part of me is usually better behaved.
