Although I have a day job, I'm also a musician. I'm also bipolar (manic-depressive). I've been saying for a long time that EVERYONE who performs music in public has some form of mental illness. And I mean EVERYONE, from the top performers on TV to the lowliest street buskers. The same goes for other folks such as actors and artists.
Now, while there is really no such thing as a "normal" human who is always rational, never has "issues," the musicians, etc, seem to have an extra helping of weirdness. I believe it is the curse that comes along with the ability we received that enabled us to play music, or act, or paint, etc.
