I wish like all hell that Winston was alive today, or someone like him. Here in Australia, our present Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, though extremely wealthy, has not got a bloody clue about the real world, much less how to run a country!. Good Christ Almighty, he has even suggested that ISIS be part of a power sharing deal over there, this idiot is stunningly, and dangerously completely out of touch. He has gone so far as to tell the world that Australia will not be putting 'boots on the ground',- way to go you bloody moron, you damnable COWARD, telling the enemy your intentions, or lack of!. When England needed a War Leader, they got Winston, now Australia needs a War Leader, we get Malcolm Turnbull, a carbon copy of the leader that Winston succeeded, Neville Chamberlain.
The bracketed "translations" are a sad commentary on the state of modern education. What are the odds that anyone who's actually literate and intellectually curious enough to read about Churchill would also *need* those particular words translated?
Jason you took the words right out of my mouth. Churchill was also an entertaining and engaging author. I really enjoyed his books (including the one quoted).
I'm thinking right now, we need a Jan Sobieski, Charles Martel, Don Juan or maybe a Vlad Tepes or two. Not that I wouldn't love a Churchill in the mix.
Even more true today than it was 100 years ago....
ReplyDeleteOr 200+ years ago when President Jefferson sent the Marines to "the shores of Tripoli"
