DragonBlasts: Sig Sauer

My EDC is a Sig 229 in 9mm. Yes, I've been told it's a sissy gun, a plastic gun, a fucking 9mm is worthless, etc. And while I'm growing quite fond of my 1911 .45, my Sig is still my baby. I'm most comfortable with it, it's easily concealable, and I'm quite proficient with it. For Glock people, I think my Sig is like James Bond, sleek, deadly, sexy, and Glocks are like the security guys at college rock concerts, big, blocky, dangerous but clumsy. If we're talking toys, Glocks are Legos and my Sig is K'Nex.

Apparently, I'm not alone in my Sig passion. A much more believable source than I, Dennis from Dragon Leather, is also a Sig fan. Go read his assessment HERE, and stop making fun of my little Sig. Remember, the caliber of the weapon means nothing if the owner can't hit the broadside of a barn. I am not that owner.

  1. What on the 229 is plastic? The grip panels maybe, but the 229 is an all metal gun.

  2. That's always been my response.
Most of the time, those comments are made out of ignorance
and prejudice, and I just let them slide.
I know what I know, and I'm good with that.

  3. You should also remind folks that the Navy SEALs picked that pistol as their sidearm of choice not too long ago. I'd imagine there's a valid reason for that. Everything about the Sig P229 is professional and uncompromising. The fit, finish, and level or workmanship are all first-rate. I've held and fired a few of the SigShop upgraded versions and I love them. I am considering adding one to my collection soon. The gun just exudes quality. The only potential shortcoming is that such quality and performance do not come cheap. Good on you lady for having such a reliable stop button so handy at all times...

  4. I recently acquired a P229 in 40 S&W. It is now my EDC gun in a Galco SOB holster. Now if I could find a set of wood grips for it, life would be good. For a lot of years, I carried 1911's. Particularly a Llama X1A. I never was much on the plastic guns. Now that I'm a proud Sig owner, I'm going to have to think about a P220 I've had my eye on. I do like my 45's.

  5. Loved my 220. Most accurate .45 I owned prior to my Gold Cup.
Unfortunately a luggage handler at DCA also like it.
Dammit! Not I have the SIG itch.

  6. Had an SP2022 in .40 caliber....sweet handgun....some asshole stole it, along with 2 clips, 100 rounds, and my loader....I like Sigs....prefer the .40 to the 9mm, though my nephew has one and it is a sweet shooter....

  7. No the SEALs didn't pick that weapon, it was the P226, then 10 years later it was the P228, the NSW group awarded them the contract. i have several friends that were on the teams and swcc, they carry what they want.

  8. I am no authority no way, no how, but I always thought Sig built the best quality firearms. I just can't afford them. I have my eye on a 1911 Commander right now. Just have to decide if I want it bad enough to get in the bad habit of selling guns to buy guns. Done it before, then wished I had the old ones, too.
    Decisions, decisions.

  9. Remind these "gun critics" that you did NOT choose your pistol to please them! I have two Sigs, an older P239 in .357 Sig and a newer P320 in .40 S&W. Both are fine weapons and I don't give a hockey puck what any one has to say. Good on you for your choice!

  10. I like my M1911A1, personally. When it comes to 9mm, I'm a fan of the Beretta M9.

Also I have a Hi-Point 995 with a Red Dot on it, that's fun to shoot.

  11. Nearly any firearm made today uses MIM parts.

Sadly, most people don't fire them enough for it to matter.

  12. Anyone who says 9mm is worthless has never been shot with it. The 124 gr +P loads are rather deadly.

  13. re: Sig. Some like 'em, some don't. A decade or so ago, the Louisiana State Police bought a metric butt-ton of them and experienced severe rust. They traded them for Glocks after a year.

But, that's why they make red bicycles and blue bicycles. Some like 'em red, some like 'em blue.

  14. It is a great gun. I like the double single action of a Sig. I don't want to muck about with the safety. Question: What is the most frequent TV gun trope: "Uhh, Safety's On."

Adrenaline is the number one cause of immediate 'safety amnesia'.

Besides the Sig fits my hand which is kind of scary big (guys visibly shrink when they put their paws up against my 'girl hand'). The doublestack is great and I can wrap my hand all the way around it.

But then heck, Hickock 45 is a Glock man and he has the biggest hands I've ever seen. It is just a matter of what works for you.

Sister with a Sig (or 3)

  15. Sigh. I only wish I lived someplace where handguns did not require special license and have to be in a locked case when travelling back and forth between home and range.

  16. If it fits you and you have confidence in the firearm, then that's the gun for you. Keep your 45 as a back-up gun or holster filler or whatever, but shoot whatever gun does it for ya.
    My gun's a compact 1911 45. Yours is a Sig 9. That's all.

  17. I've tried my brother's and I didn't really like the long trigger pull from the first round. Now that Sig has stepped up into the big boy's ring and started making the P220 in 10mm I might have to put one on my list.

Honestly for the caliber, almost all defensive ammo manufacturers try to get into the FBI specs and the hole they make doesn't really vary a whole lot. I think it was Wirecutter that posted the defensive bullet tests.

Last month a friend of mine, on the other side of the country, asked me which pistol to get (he was dead set on 9mm because he had a lot of ammo for it already). He asked about a revolver to use as both defensive and plinking but I steered him to a semi auto. In his price range I told him to try the xD, M&P, and Glock. He shot the Glock the best and it fit his hand better. They are just tools, find the one that fits you. Don't get too hung up on brand names, they may all operate slightly differently but they all do the same thing.

Sorry, sometimes I get into a talkative mood. I'll disappear for another month now.

  18. I agree with Kenny. I had a sig 229 .40. I couldn't get my hand around the grip. ( I can't get my hand around ANY Hi-Cap pistol grip. The grip on the S&W 29 is too big and I'd WAY rather carry a .44 mag so....). So my 1911A1. Sig makes a nice gun, but, if I have to cock my wrist 10deg. to hold it..... Besides , IF I carry a pistol at all, its my Mod 10 S&W or my SAA in .45LC and the "bedroom gun" is a "pre-64" 870 factory "police" shotgun. In fact, when I sold off the bulk of my collection to pay my cancer bills, the only Hi- Cap weapon I kept was my semi-auto Izmash AK-103 clone. But I digress. I guess guns are kinnda like ice cream , some of us like vanilla and some like chocolate. ----Ray

  19. For the 9mm bashers- FBI returning to 9mm "After the Miami Shootout in 1986, the FBI invented modern ammunition testing and led the law-enforcement movement to .40 caliber. The FBI is very conservative, and has one of the best ballistics labs in the world.

With the amazing 21st-century advances in ammunition technology, many people have advocated a move back to 9mm. Recently, the FBI announced they were buying a new gun in 9mm. When the FBI makes a move like that, they have thought it through very thoroughly."

    And their justification here:
"· Contemporary projectiles (since 2007) have dramatically increased the terminal effectiveness of many premium line law enforcement projectiles (emphasis on the 9mm Luger offerings)

    · 9mm Luger now offers select projectiles which are, under identical testing conditions, I outperforming most of the premium line .40 S&W and .45 Auto projectiles tested by the FBI

    · 9mm Luger offers higher magazine capacities, less recoil, lower cost (both in ammunition and wear on the weapons) and higher functional reliability rates (in FBI weapons)

    · The majority of FBI shooters are both FASTER in shot strings fired and more ACCURATE with shooting a 9mm Luger vs shooting a .40 S&W (similar sized weapons)

    · There is little to no noticeable difference in the wound tracks between premium line law Auto enforcement projectiles from 9mm Luger through the .45 Auto"

  20. My EDC is a Glock G37 45GAP. If you are comfortable with the Sig, carry the Sig. As long as you are proficient with it that is what matters most. I have never found a 1911 45ACP that didn't pinch or hurt my hand when I shot it. My dad was a 1911 fan and had about 20 variations over the years. I like the G37.

Play nice. None of you are too old for a spanking.
