Remembering Reagan

I still remember all the protests against Reagan becoming the Republican nominee. He was a "liberal". He used to be a Democrat. He wasn't really a "politician", he was an actor. He was a joke, a maverick and uncontrollable. He would ruin the Republican Party and the country. I don't know how you feel about Trump, but it sounds like all the same arguments from the same establishment.

  1. I do not recall the love and affection displayed for the Reagans while they lived in the White House. I certainly do not recall the overwhelming outpouring of love and admiration for Nancy that has been flogged over the past few days.

Those of us who lived during the Reagan era genuinely mourn the passing of a class act. God blessed us with the Reagans and if there is anything that is actually heaven, Nancy is now sharing it with her Ronnie.

  2. Ronald Reagan was the man that shut down all the state mental hospitals in California when he was governor, putting people that couldn't care for themselves out on the street.
Ronald Reagan was President when we suddenly had to start using our SSN as an identifier.
I wasn't a big Reagan fan then and I'm not now.

    1. I think is was Pat Brown, Regan's predecessor that signed signed that law. It just went into effect during Regan's term.

  3. Wirecutter, I have yet to see a perfect politician.
If you can't find something to disagree with, then you aren't looking hard enough. I would really like to believe that a Libertarian candidate would be close to perfect, and I'm willing to keep betting my vote on it, but they would still be human and fallible. And just as corruptible as any other man.

I agree, the changes in care for the mentally disabled were horrible, and probably one of the leading factors of most of the recent mass shootings. But there were also so many horrors occurring in state mental institutions. Such a hard call to make.

  4. Don't forget he was "unelectable"... at least according to the Party elite.

  5. Hmm....My comment apparently didn't agree. With somebody.

Okay. The canard about Reagan "closing the mental institutions" is pure leftie propaganda, bought into by most of the populace. Trouble is, it's not true - even Snopes agrees, by the way. I was there too, and it's real clear to me that the "liberal" screechers made such a stink about the Sainted Under-Privileged that Reagan was forced to outlaw involuntary commitment, thereby effectively shutting down California's state hospital system. There were daily scare stories about the rights of street bums, and the horrors of state maintenance. And Reagan caved, and 40 years later the streets are filled with the detritus of left-wing moral superiority. But Reagan didn't put 'em there, the lefties did to make themselves feel better.

"Libertarians," for obscure reasons, are dead-set on making a statement by opposing Trump. One can only hope they have the grace to stop whining once Hillary is in the White House.
