For most of human history, only the rich could afford an extra hungry mouth to feed and the land needed to feed it, since it had to eat every day whether you used it or not.
FYI, ANON, I know a helluva lot of poor cowboys who own more than a few of em, and manage quite well; but then, they treat and use em like horses, not overgrown pampered poodle dogs.....Come out beyond the pavement sometime....
and we are only now pioneering vehicles that will drive themselves....and those won't run on grass or grain.....
