Snowflakes, Personal Responsibility and Darwinism

First, I want to say that the loss of human life in the Oakland "Ghost Ship" warehouse fire is horrible. Anytime a person dies is a loss; when someone dies needlessly from negligence, stupidity or criminal attack, it's even worse. It's a preventable loss.

That being said, some of the comments from the "artsy fartsy" Bay Area community about fearing for their "safe spaces" in the wake of this disaster show us how truly disconnected from reality these people are. "Safe spaces" from whom? From what? What they're talking about is cheap housing in one of the most expensive housing markets in the U.S. where they're able to do whatever the fuck they want without regard to common sense safety. This warehouse was owned by an unconcerned owner, rented by a megalomaniacal narcissist who illegally subletted the space to equally irresponsible and disconnected "artists". The owner didn't care as long as the $5000 monthly rent was paid on time and no government fines were levied; Derick Almena didn't care as long as the "artists" were paying enough to cover the $5000 rent plus his living expenses (pretty damned capitalistic, if you ask me), and the resident artists didn't care as long as they got to follow their bliss without government intrusion for a greatly discounted monthly rent.

Nobody had the common sense of self-preservation to look up from their self-absorbed blissful art-filled lives and think, "Whoa, wait a minute, this place is a tinderbox and we've got no means of handling an emergency. This is dangerous." This is Darwinism.

I have no problem with people wanting less government in their lives. Geez, this is The Lonely Libertarian here, ya know? But if you have a generation of snowflakes who have been bred and brainwashed to believe other people (government) should cure all problems so that they can be left to do whatever snowflakes do, you'd better be ready for the gory outcome when government doesn't lift a finger to keep them safe. These people are so far removed from the rest of normal humanity that common sense and self-preservation have been completely bred out of them. These are the idiots that walk into traffic while looking at their iPhones. They voluntarily put themselves in way of mortal danger because they simply DO NOT SEE IT.

So here's my advice to the Artsy Fartsy folk of the world who "fear for their safe spaces."

GROW THE FUCK UP.
It's very, very simple. You are the Captain of your own motherfucking ship. You are responsible for your life; and if you give a fuck about your fellow artsy fartsy folk, you're a little bit responsible for their lives. And if you have children? Dear God in Heaven, I am appalled that NOT ONE ADULT in this hell-hole of a hippie commune was concerned for the safety of children living in this disaster area. When you have a child, you are solely responsible for the safety and well-being of that child. Even if you don't give a shit about your own safety, you do not have the right to endanger that child. Get your empty snowflake heads out of your self-indulgent asses and take some responsibility.

Know where the exits are and keep them clear and well-marked. Clear out debris that could hamper someone leaving in an emergency, or could add fuel to the fire. Invest in some communal fire extinguishers and make sure everyone knows where they are and how to use them. Buy smoke alarms and make sure they're operable (no stealing the batteries for your personal sexual fulfillment devices). Just because you choose to live in a warehouse on the cheap doesn't mean you have to abandon all common sense and responsibility.

I know I'm harshing your mellow, coming down on you like The Establishment; but seriously, how hard is it to grow up and grow old? Because, right now, you're all in the running for the 2016 Darwin Awards.

  2. Totally agreed. Next....eagerly anticipating the response to the Pipeline Protestors who are crying for aid from a NORTH EFFING DAKOTA blizzard, after refusing assistance from pipeline crews to evacuate. I had a lot of sympathy up until I read that last bit. Now I'm laughing as I sit back with a fresh bowl of popcorn.

  3. I had compassion at one time, I was a nurse, had a lot of empathy for my suffering fellow man. But, unless it is me or mine and people who have a clue about what life is about I have no sympathy or care one less. Too many people want someone else to be responsible for their miserable snowflaking lives. You rant well! Just because they think they are unique doesn't mean they are useful...

  4. Pampered. And no clue. And Darsin is neither mean nor cruel. He just is.

Failure to take responsibility, when you keep the authorities from being able to do so, is, ultimately, a death sentence. But letting the authorities have a say in their safety would have raised the cost of their housing.

The Chinese call it luck. Or "Joss".

I call it a terrible example of the uncaringness of the universe.

Choices are made. Sometimes you win....other times not.

  5. Well said.

And the snowflakes should take special note, that the GOVERNMENT they see as the solution to all of lifes problems ignored the situation at that building which lead to the completely foreseeable disaster. The Building department didn't care enough to actually get inside the building, and the fire inspectors apparently didn't even have the building listed as a place to check out EVER.

It was only when the disaster had already happened that the FireFighters (God Bless them) showed up, and did what they could.

There are no safe spaces, snowflakes. There are only spaces that individuals can make less risky for themselves...Relying on others for your own self protection is folly.

  10. It seems that the whole reason government happens is to make certain that the least able to survive on their own, live to breed. So a box full of queers, communist, druggies, and assorted stupid died of terminal stupid. If that had been the entire city of San Fransico it wouldn't have made a dent in the stupid's. The fact that this group of young and stupid died young (and stupid) was NOT the fault of anyone but themselves. They decided to do stupid things in a stupid way at a stupid place with stupid people for stupid reasons. You can heal the sick. You can educate the ignorant. You can medicate crazy. You can't fix stupid.-----Ray
