To be perfectly honest, I haven't had a donut in months, almost a year. But the emotional stress is starting to chant "Bavarian cream longjohn". If I knew how to do the man-donuts, I'd do those instead.
The lower is why I'm a Top Gear fanatic....BBC top gear..not the hillbilly History Channel version that I SHOULD like. I'll take a Lambo any day over a Corvette, and if you disagree I don't have a problem with calling you a liar!!!
That is a timely post. Last Friday morning at 6am I fueled up at Safeway on the local main drag. As I was leaving I noticed water in the gutter street intersection thing. Hmm, I wonder if this truck can still light'em up? Yep, 5700lbs sideways in front of a shitload of confused commuters made my fucking day! Needless to say I made a hasty (ticketless) departure.
^...I've got a '66 'stang with a 408 Windsor & Tremec 3550 5 speed, it doesn't need water to get started getting sideways... Are you after my heart or something??? ;)
'65 & '66 are basically the same except for the grill and interior trim... Mom had I '65 fastback, I've now got a '66 that looks just like hers except mine has the white rally stripes... and makes a rumbling sound that makes the ground shake...
I'm building a motor for my father's '67, while he redoes the interior and bodywork. The previous owner botched it up REAL bad. Think Oliver tractor green....on EVERYTHING! Interior included......WTF!
.030 over 302, 58cc chamber pre-smog heads, gasket matched ports that have had the bowls reworked and blended, competition 3 angle valve job with back cut valves and swirl polished stems, flat-top pistons, and CompCams XtremeEnergy valve train rounded out with a high-rise intake topped with an 1850 Holley.
I'm figuring on a touch over 300HP, not as BAD-ASS as Dave's stroked and poked Windsor - but it'll be respectable. --------------------------------------------------------------
"They're really a lot of fun. I play with mine all the time."
The girl donuts are WAY cheaper! I'm looking at really expensive rubber on the 2013 Mustang. I don't want to think about replacing them yet. If I am lucky I might get 30K miles out of them.
Leigh, If the budget has a little room, you might want to consider buying a 347 kit using a scat crank. They're not that expensive if you spend a little time shopping around and don't intend to require more than 7500 or 8000 rpm. OTOH, you might want to check out D.D.S. competition products out of Chicago. They're expensive, but you get the entire kit, crank and rods are forged, pistons, rings and bearings are included, and when I bought mine from them, as long as you had it properly balanced they guaranteed it to hold together in excess of 10,000. The down side is that I had to wait 4 months to get mine. More cubes equals more horsepower. And think about Cleveland heads too, all you have to do is drill one hole in each head and block an existing hole in each head, you get bigger valves than Trick Flow heads will give you and that baby will be able to breath!
Dave - The budget was pretty much set by the Old Man. All he wanted was a stock rebuild....like that was going to happen. I was admonished, however, NOT to make it too radical - ie: under 10:1 compression, no "BIG" cam, etc. This coming from a guy who used to run a "30-30 Duntov" on the street in his '65 Super Sport. So I went looking for free HP!
As we both know, real power comes out of the heads. So with die grinder in hand I spent about 60 hours opening, blending, and polishing the ports and chambers. I spent a lot of time making sure the short side radius was right. The Thermactor casting was completely removed from the exh ports; and being non-CA '73 heads, the passage for air-injection wasn't drilled - so no restriction there either. I then back-cut the valves from the seat angle of 45, to 30, then 20. The CompCams Xtreme Energy XE256H bump stick is about as big as I think I can sneak in there with a stock convertored C4. I'm putting a Hi-Rise dual plane and a vacuum secondary 600 Holley on it to ad to the streetability. This car is going to be a driver - so car shows and the drag strip aren't going to be on the menu.
Myself, I'm currently looking for a Fox chassis, sleeper to terrorize the local Hemi population. Think T-Bird or Fairmont with a 427 "Clevor". Yeah, I know the secrets of making a BOSS! Now if I only knew where there was a Fontana block for cheap...I was born too late to enjoy the horsepower wars of the 60's. To have gotten behind the wheel of a 429 BOSS, 428SCJ, GT500KR or a Talladaga Torino.....! Ten years back, I built a 300-6 for my '87 F-150 that would pull past 6800! So, I do have some experience turning massive quantities of processed dinosaurs into big shit-eating grins!
I've heard a lot of good things about DDS, also Coast High Performance and Probe Industries too. Try checking out Competition Products. I used to deal with them a lot when I ran Dirt Late Models. They have just recently branched out into other engines besides brand "C". Their prices on heads are real competitive.
When the '67 is finished, I'll post the pics - If 'Angel will let me....
Leigh, I'd be more than happy to post your pics and any write-up, explanations, etc, you'd like to send in. And y'all are welcome. I like to think of my blog as the local Patriot watering hole, where y'all can meet, chat, exchange ideas, blow off some steam, relax.
