Schools don't like it when parents or kids think for themselves.

Grew up in the country, first day of deer season always had high male absenteeism. My mother refuse to lie to the school, the first time anyway, she put "went on a trip with his father" for the excused absence and was floored when they did not accept it. I spent hours equal to time missed from school in detention. Second year, she said OK, lying this time. School called the house, my sister answered, "oh he's upstate deer hinting". Detention, again. :-)

Truth be told, each school is allocated dollars based on attendance. An absent child is a child they don't get paid for. Every day you take your child on an educational trip or even just to bond with the family, is a day the school doesn't collect the cash for them showing up.

When you follow the money, the reason for their zero tolerance on absences becomes crystal clear.

Tough Shit. My Kid. My rules. Keeping your kid in Government schools is child abuse. Do not get me started on lockdowns either....

My big school gave us first day of deer hunting off. The teachers on the bargaining committee were men, and were hunters. In Michigan, there areb certain days assigned for counting students, and if they are absent, the school can fi!e to Haven them added later. But, the crown can can go fuck off, still. No taking money due to their greed.

First day of deer season at my school was usually spent with the principal. Yes, he was deer hunting too. He'd take all the junior and senior boys who wanted to hunt, usually ten plus. He also took several of the kids for pheasant, duck and goose hunts.

Back in the late 80's, my sister was an honor student and visiting colleges for a week during school in her senior year. My mom sent an absent note stating this.

The jackass of a Asst Principal actually called my mother questioning the absent note trying to say it was not going to be accepted. My mother went up one side of him and down the other. The money quote, "Don't you have a juvenile delinquent to deal with rather than harassing honor students?"

The note was accepted. He ended sucking up to her every time she met with the face to face after this. He would fetch her coffee.

again, all bureaucrats(in dc or local) can kiss my unreconstructed ass!

AND, Jeremy R, if your principal trained any to be like him, please give me their addresses. The school my G'son attends WILL hire one (or more) of em!!!

When my youngest son was in 2nd grade we gave the school notice that we were traveling the week after Labor Day (best time to travel and my wife and I still vacation then)and the teacher simply assigned him to keep a journal of our travels and the museums & historical sights we visited and gave him credit for it.

I had issues with a lot of the shit that happened throughout my sons' school days but, for this they were accommodating. No one more surprised than me but, he wasn't going to be there that week either way.
