Coolest dudes in band

I was a band geek in high school. Started with flute in 6th grade and progressed to piccolo, then oboe and bassoon (small town, a lot of us did double/triple/quadruple duty when a piece called for a different instrument). I had a love/hate relationship with the reed instruments, especially the double reeds. They tickled my lips, very distracting. During marching season, they'd put me on the xylophone because of my notoriously bad marching skills. Don't know left from right, and asking me to actually march and play at the same time was begging for disaster. I once caused a twelve flag-girl pileup on the 40 yard line. I was a twirler for a couple of years until I set the turf on fire when I dropped my fire baton. I got to sneak back into the percussion section during Christmas to play the chimes and bells. Why did I get these plum assignments (aside from not being able to march)? Because drummers can't read sheet music for shit. Notes, sharps, flats, uh-uh. Can't handle it.

Where was I going with this? Oh yes, the drummers. I have a weakness for drummers. Hot, sexy drummers. Show me a man with sticks and rhythm who can independently operate both hands and feet, and I melt. And if he twirls those damn sticks over his head? Instant panty combustion. I had the biggest crush on the lead drummer, Randy, who played the quad toms. The boy's sticks were a magical blur as he stood there in the glare of the stadium lights, bored "bad boy" expression on his face. Mesmerizing. Broke out my high school year book the other day, flashback time. And there he was, my percussion hottie. Six feet, 120 pounds of greasy haired acne-covered awkwardness. Must have been the sticks.

The drummers in my school band were forever getting yelled at by the band teacher. Like most average drummers, they would attempt to supplement skill with volume.

Then there were the two girls in the percussion section. They were a couple of machines! Perfect, emotionless machines!

I tried to play a clarinet once. Never got a note out of it.

I know a goodly number of guys that are/were in rock bands. The drummers always had the stories of the freakiest chicks.

This made me wish I would have learned to play drums.

Our youngest got a drum set when he was 12. By 16, he was in a rock band making money. His band teacher said he was the most natural drummer he had ever seen. And yes, he does all of that trick shit with the sticks. He was good enough that the Marines considered him for the band. He went into amphib assault instead. Crazy kid.

He was driving a armored huvee in Iraq and ran over a IED. He didn't bother to call his mom for 3 days. He told her that if he had died, he would have let her know. Us Marines, bullet proof and explosion resistant.

Read about and listen to the drummer then realize that he is 10 years old.

Maybe it's just the way they paradiddle?

Oh Ian, I just love watching a man paradiddle.

Heck with the drummers, you should check out the harmonica players. Harmonica players have the most talented tongues around! :-)

I recently found your blog, and love it! I love when someone can truly write what they want without fear of their boss firing them (which is why I don't blog my basic thoughts, or I'd have a blog a lot like yours).

Anyway, I am a musician (harmonica/piano/accordion (both piano-key and button)) and have played in various bands for many years. My favorite portrayal of a drummer in a movie was by John Doe as "Earl" in the George Strait movie "Pure Country." Check it out if you haven't.

Rusty! Welcome to the nuthouse, darlin'. I can pretty much rant my head off, I'm a stay-at-home mom. The Cute Chicks are my bosses, and they're pretty lenient. I remember "Pure Country", I'll have to go back and look for the drummer.
