The forks and penny balance on the rim of the glass because
(1) the mass distribution of the fork-coin-fork is symmetric about a line extending from a radius of the glass through the point of contact of the coin
and
(2) the center of mass for the fork-coin-fork is slightly "inside" the glass (notice that the forks are angled towards the glass and the arms of the forks are on the glass side of a tangent line drawn at the point of contact)
... the downward force of the "system" is equal on either side of the tangent line to the contact point ... and the system is in static balance

Most engineers I know could be outsmarted by a roll of duct tape. They always come to this old tool and die maker for their reality check.
Oh, and regarding a lib arts degree. Satan's workshop 01, i.e. my oldest has a liberal arts degree. He works in a dog boarding hotel.
