I've got one of those and the fireball at the muzzle is most impressive. The thing that surprised me about it is the change in accuracy when the bayonet is extended.
I prefer my Enfields also. However, I have a Model 91, made in 1898. Made for a Czar, taken by the commies, captured by the Finns, and used to kill commies. How can you not like a rifle with a history like that?
I managed to get my hands on an M44 (a rare blond at that) a number of years ago. Though I like my 91/30, the M44 handles better in deep brush...and here in Florida, we have plenty of that.
It is a true fact that the M44 will accomplish all you listed. A good rifle for the money. Especially back when they were $49.99 each and ammo was DIRT cheap.
