I was thinking more along the lines of "narcissism". I've known some people who wouldn't be satisfied with anyone less fabulous than themselves, and given the legal opportunity to wed, they would have lived happily ever after with themselves.

As I understand it, the Mormon church doesn't really condone polygamy anymore. There was that judge who OK'd a 3-person civil union, though.
But yeah, that really should be an even number...
