Walipini: How to build a year-round underground greenhouse

I absolutely love the Knowledge Weighs Nothing website, the place I get my coolest and out-there ideas. Today, they bring you the walipini (an Aymara Indian word for a “place of warmth”). This is beyond cool; and if I can finagle borrowing a friends Bobcat, my Spring Break project next year. We ended up taking down our hoop greenhouse when we realized, even with an 80% sunshade cover, the interior temps were cooking the veggies on the vine. Actually, after I spent an afternoon replacing an exhaust fan motor in 90+ heat and passing out, I decided the greenhouse was too much. I moved the hoops around to cover my three raised beds and two berry pyramids, open-ended for ventilation and with the 80% shade cover, which left the 20x30 foot partially excavated spot bare and begging for a project. If I can figure out how to do the work AND take the pics, I'll post the process.

Anywhoo, KWN has a link to the pdf file (29 pages) of instructions for the building of the walipini. Go check it out.

I like this concept. I remember seeing house plans similar in concept to this, except adapted for a hillside. The house was like 3 stories, and the outer wall defined them, but the inside was open for air flow. (Easier to visualize than explain) Always better to make use of the laws of nature than it is to circumvent them.
