I spent many a happy browsing & buying up until the internet killed off most of our second-hand bookshops with easy travelling distance - many are still selling, but via Ebay or Amazon from cheap storage rather than expensive retail units. I can't say I've lost out by this as I no longer have to carry my library catalogue around (for avoiding duplicates) - I just check the shelf before I press BUY.
I have found some very good history books that I would not have known existed without finding them in a used bookstore. It is also a good place to find older editions of books that have not been politically corrected(scary to see the extent to which that is done). The older the bookstore, the better it is, as they have had more time to acquire off-the-beaten-path stuff. We make a pilgrimage north now and then to Colorado Springs which has two good ones, "Hooked on Books" and "Poor Richard's"...
I love Yesterday's Books in Modesto. I've found some outrageous out of print history books there, in fact most of my library comes from that store. Even of they don't have what I'm looking for, I'm still gonna be down at least 20-30 bucks when I leave.
