My kid got the same treatment in 3rd grade when he solved their arithmetic problems algebraically and was reading Tolkien's Rings trilogy.
FYI, this was in the gifted program....
The school(s) (all the way through high school), and whomever his teacher(s) happened to be, learned to hate seeing us coming. We never let up, never backed off, and - eventually - won every battle.
Was it worth it? From an educational standpoint, we should have home schooled him so he could progress at his own pace (we did a surprising amount of that anyway, at places like the dinner table, museums, air shows, etc. without really trying too hard). From a personal standpoint, he learned that being an individual was not a bad thing, that his parents would stand up for him and not back down when he was wronged, and that "systems" are designed to be managed, you just have to learn how each system works to do that.
School bored me to tears. I about quit going... Sending children to government schools could be labeled child abuse. They are producing a population of drones, indoctrinated, not educated.
This is exactly right. We are sending my kid to a private school, and although it is immeasurably better than the local PS, we still spend a few hours a week dealing with the propaganda she gets there. The only way to be sure is to take off, and nuke the site from orbit. Oddly enough, this may be happening right now w/ the virus issues we are facing.
How things have changed. I graduated high school in 1969. My 11th grade American History teacher actively encouraged us to disagree with her, as long as we had citations (library, card catalog: look it up, whippersnappers!) in hand to back up our arguments. Some of us referred to her as Murphy the Red, because she was so far left-wing.
It started changing not long after; I heard that some of the advanced class sections were merged with less-advanced students because feelings were hurt, or some such BS.
My daughter, who is 24, got some of the crap noted, but my wife usually got it fixed. She was active in the PTA, and made sure everyone there knew that I was far more unreasonable toward anti-learning PC garbage than she was, so do it her way.
Believe it or not but my mother taught me how to read before I ever even started school, this was back in the early 60's, before they had "gifted" classes. I ran into some of these same scenarios all the way through school. I hated school because I was so far in front of all my classmates that at times I had a vocabulary surpassing my teachers! Even in the 70's the indoctrination was palpable and to me, school was a fucking baby sitting service. Now I see things like this and just want to scream. Gifted students get beat down and humiliated .It is sickening. Kids I talk to, including my step kids, are dumber than a box of rusty hammers, by design. Now they come out with this Common Core Crap. God help us.
