This is one reason I have a very large selection of hammers in my tool boxes. They range from tiny little tack hammers to BFH's* for those troublesome situations.
@Kyle: So true! We had 6 or 7 air purifiers (ionizers) on our subs. One of them, the furthest one aft, would NOT start unless you tapped it twice on the top (place was marked) and hit it once, solidly, on the right side. Skipper and Engineer hated that, had us take it apart to figure out the problem. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it, but it had to be hit that way to start it up. Manufacturer rep was in the area once, they got him down on the boat to fix it...HE (MIT engineer of some sort) couldn't figure out what was up. After that...it was just viewed as one of those mystical "well, that's weird" things that happens. And until the day we decommissioned the boat, that particular purifier had to be tapped twice on the top, and smacked once on the right side.

But then people start accusing you of violations of the 13th amendment, especially if you trade in for newer models;)
It works by either (a) causing them to self-correct, or (b) shutting them down permanently.
I'm okay with either course of action.
